Understanding Your Design Rules

Every space, every design choice follows rules - whether we realize it or not. Let's explore yours.

Take a moment to imagine designing your ideal living room. What colors appear? What style of sofa? Modern or traditional? Minimal or detailed? What patterns or art would you include?

Now shift to imagining a hotel lobby. Do your rules change? Why?

Think about a recent design decision you made - maybe an outfit choice or a furniture purchase. What rules guided that choice?  Really - why did you pick that thing when there are so many options?  Really ask yourself - why that thing in particular?  Some design rules serve us well, while others might be limiting our vision.

Consider a space you truly love spending time in. What design elements make it special? Are your personal design rules aligned with creating spaces like this? Or are they serving different priorities?

Your design rules tell a story - they're shaped by your journey, influences, and experiences. Some are like solid walls, fundamental principles that truly support your vision. Others are more like fences - useful sometimes, but maybe ready to be moved.

The key isn't about right or wrong rules - it's about understanding which ones serve the life you want to create. Your rules are part of your creative DNA, but like all living things, they can change.

Ask yourself: Do my design rules support the spaces and life I want to create?
